Summary
This guide explains how to use Respondus LockDown Browser to take quizzes in Canvas and what to expect during the testing process.
Things to Know
- LockDown Browser is only required if your instructor enabled it.
- Some quizzes / exams also require Respondus Monitor (webcam recording).
- Quizzes may be Classic or New Quizzes. The steps to start your quiz are slightly different. Follow the section that matches your quiz.
Step 1: Install LockDown Browser
If you have not installed LockDown Browser:
- Download using the FSU Respondus Lockdown Browser link.
- Run the installer.
- Follow the prompts.

Step 2a: Start Your [Classic] Quiz
(1) Close all programs on your computer.
(2) Open LockDown Browser.

(2) Log into Canvas.
(4) Open the quiz and select Begin.

Step 2b: Start Your [New] Quiz
(1) Close all programs on your computer.
(2) Log into Canvas from any Web browser.
(3) Navigate to your course and open the quiz.
(4) Click Begin or Take the Quiz.
(5) If prompted, allow Canvas to launch LockDown Browser.

Important Quiz Taking Notes
- If webcam monitoring is required, a Startup Sequence will guide you through: Webcam and microphone check, Environment setup, Instructor-required steps.
- Once a quiz starts, you may not be able to resume the exam upon exit.
- If you see messages or programs close automatically, this is expected behavior.
- If your webcam is not detected, restart your computer and close other camera apps.
