Canvas Use Guidelines

Summary

These guidelines outline the types of sites permitted in Canvas. They are designed to ensure that:

  • Canvas is used exclusively for its intended purpose—teaching and learning.
  • Canvas delivers an optimal instructional experience.
  • The University remains in compliance with vendor terms, conditions, and agreements.

Approved Uses

Use Description
Instruction Courses offered as part of a degree program, continuing education program, or professional certificate.
Course Development  Sites used for the development of courses related to traditional courses/programs, continuing education programs, or professional certificates.
Course Evaluations Course evaluations that require access to Canvas course content.
Student Resource Sites To provide information and resources to students related to courses/programs, continuing education, or professional certificates.

Exceptions

Employees may request an exception to use Canvas for a unapproved use case. 

Exception Guidelines

  • The lead time required for exception requests is 10 business days. 
  • Each exception request will be reviewed to determine whether the planned use is acceptable.
  • Approved exceptions will be granted for a limited duration of 6, 9, or 12 months. A one-time extension of up to 3 months may be requested before the original exception period expires.
