Grading Turnitin Assignments

Summary

This article explains how to grade Turnitin assignments using Turnitin Feedback Studio within Canvas.


(1) Open the Turnitin Assignment

  • Click Assignments in the Canvas navigation menu.
  • Click the name of the Turnitin-enabled assignment you want to grade.
  • Depending on your assignment settings, you may see a button that says Load in a New Window. If you do, click it — Turnitin will open in a new browser window.

(2) View the Turnitin Submission List

(a) Once the assignment opens, Turnitin displays a list of student submissions.

(b) Find the student’s row in the submission list. Click the pencil icon in the Grade column next to the student’s name OR click the Title of the submitted assignment. This will open the student’s paper in Turnitin Feedback Studio.

(3) Provide Feedback

Turnitin Studio allow you to comment and leave feedback. With these tools, you can:

  • Instantly see questionable text highlighted in the submission.
  • Click highlighted text to view the original source context.
  • Comment directly on the document (inline comments).
  • Add QuickMarks (predefined comment sets).
  • Leave overall comments.
  • Provide voice/audio comments, similar to Canvas SpeedGrader.
  • These tools allow you to grade, comment, and add instructional feedback without leaving Feedback Studio.

(4) Save Grades

From the top of the page: 

(a) Enter the student’s Grade.

  • Grades entered in Turnitin Feedback Studio automatically sync to the Canvas Gradebook. 
  • If a grade does not appear immediately, refresh the page or reopen the assignment. 

(b) Use the left and right arrows to move to the previous and next student submission.This allows you to save grades and continue grading student submissions without returning to the submission list.
